October began with a meaningful start as our staff spent a morning at the New Horizon Centre (Jurong Point), run by Dementia Singapore. The centre supports elderly individuals living with dementia, offering activities that keep them engaged and active.
Our volunteers connected with clients through conversations and games like Jenga and Musical Chairs, filling the session with laughter and warmth.
This volunteering initiative was built on the foundation of a Dementia Awareness Talk held earlier in August, where valuable insights were shared with our staff. The session covered signs and symptoms, risk factors, and communication strategies, while also highlighting lifestyle choices that can help reduce dementia risk. A poignant sharing by a patient and caregiver brought the topic to life, showing both the challenges and the hope that comes with a dementia diagnosis.
Together, the talk and volunteering experience deepened our understanding and strengthened our commitment to supporting a dementia-inclusive community. Our first session with Dementia Singapore will certainly not be our last.
